The US Open Tennis 2009 results from Saturday, September 5 had some major upsets, including top ranked Dinara Safina getting bounced from the women’s bracket.  Add to that #29 Maria Sharapova losing and #3 Andy Roddick being eliminated on the men’s side and underdogs ruled Day 6 of the tournament.

First on the men’s side, Andy Roddick, who made it to the Wimbledon finals only to lose an epic five set match against Roger Federer, was expected to do some damage in the only Grand Slam he has won in his career.  Instead he doesn’t make it into the fourth round, losing to John Isner in the fifth set tie breaker.

Roddick put himself in a major hole as he dropped the first two sets 7 – 6; 6 – 3.  He did make an impressive comeback as he forced a fifth set by winning the third and fourth sets 6 – 3; 7 – 5.  But he didn’t have enough to overcome Isner and he’ll chalk up another year without a Grand Slam title.  His one and only Grand Slam title came in the US Open in 2003.

The other featured match of Day 6 on the men’s side had top ranked Roger Federer battling #31 Lleyton Hewitt.  The way Hewitt has been playing I expected this one to go into the fifth set and I thought Hewitt had a legitimate chance to beat Federer.  It appeared I was right when Hewitt took the first set 6 – 4. However, Federer elevated his game and won the next three sets (6 – 3; 7 – 5; 6 – 4) to punch his ticket for the fourth round.

Other players advancing to the fourth round included #4 Novak Djokovic, #8 Nikolay Davydenko, #10 Fernando Verdasco, #12 Robin Soderling, #14 Tommy Robredo and #15 Radek Stepanek.

The upsets were flying on the women’s side as well as top ranked Dinara Safina fell to Petra Kvitova. Just like Roddick, Safina found herself in a hole quickly. She lost the first set (4 – 6) but was able to grab the second set (6 – 2) to square the match at one set each.  In another match that was decided in a tie breaker Kvitova was able to out-duel Safina 7 – 5 to take the third set and the match. So yet another disappointing showing for Safina who will most definitely lose that number one ranking after this tournament.

The way Maria Sharapova has been playing since her comeback from injury her loss in the third round was another disappointment. Sharapova had looked strong in the first two rounds and appeared to be a solid pick to go deep into the tournament.  But 17 year old Melanie Oudin seems to be coming of age as she has found her game in the US Open.  She was able to get by Sharapova in three sets (3 – 6; 6 – 4; 7 – 5) to advance into the fourth round.
