Nadal was leading one set to none, with a second set tiebreak underway until the rain came. With the US Open 2009 women’s tennis semifinals today, and with more bad rain expected, it will be hard to fit the end of the Nadal-Gonzalez match in today’s schedule.
Serena Williams is supposed to face Kim Clisters today, with Carolina Wozniacki facing Yanina Wickmayer in the second women’s semifinal. This begins a final weekend where the US Open 2009 tennis results head for their thrilling conclusion. Instead, the focus may be more on getting the matches finished during spare dry spells, and getting them all done before Sunday.
There is a 90% chance of rain, making it certain that there will be at least some delays. Whether any tennis will be played at all today is uncertain. Men’s semifinalists Roger Federer, Juan Martin del Potro and Novak Djokovic are also in limbo, hoping they can play on Saturday.
The last tennis major to be this threatened by rain was the 2008 Wimbledon, which had rain delays during the famed Federer-Nadal final. As a result, a retractable roof had to be put on Centre Court the next year. It would likely be more difficult to put a roof over Arthur Ashe Stadium, however – especially since this is the first time rain has been a problem in the whole tournament.
But it finally arrives at the worst time, as the last US Open 2009 tennis results are held hostage to Mother Nature. Will the rush to get things done quickly affect the actual play itself – or is a Serena Williams championship and a Federer-Nadal final still inevitable anyway, no matter when the tournament ends?
If there is US Open tennis to be played, Gonzalez, Clisters, Wozniacki and Wickmayer will try to stop that inevitability – at some point during the day.
