The news that Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel underwent an appendectomy on Wednesday may suggest he is not gonna be available on Sunday against the San Diego Chargers. While the official damage report will not come out till Friday, I’m with the mindset that it will be backup QB Brodie Croyle getting the nod.

It is been well more than a year before we realistically talked about Croyle as being a starter for your Chiefs. We’ve not noticed him as a starting quarterback because Sept. thirteen, 2009 — the first day of the 2009 normal season.

What is Appendectomy?

According to HealthCentral.Com, An appendectomy is the surgical removal of an inflamed or infected appendix (appendicitis). The appendix is a small, finger-shaped pouch of intestinal tissue extending from the cecum, which is the first part of the large intestine. Blockage of the opening of the appendix into the bowel by a hard small stool fragment (fecalith) is believed to be a frequent cause of appendicitis.

The infected appendix must be surgically removed (emergency appendectomy), because if it becomes perforated (leaks), this can lead to infection of the entire abdominal space (peritonitis), which can be fatal.

The surgery is done while the patient is unconscious and pain-free, using general anesthesia. A small incision is made in the right lower quadrant of the abdomen, and the appendix is removed. Alternatively, the appendix may be removed laparoscopically with a smaller incision, using a tiny camera to visualize the area.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel’s injury to his left leg isn’t believed to be serious, a league source told National Football Post following the initial diagnosis.

More medical tests are expected to be conducted on Cassel today, but the Chiefs may have dodged the proverbial bullet on this one if the immediate prognosis turns out to be accurate. X-rays conducted on Saturday night revealed no broken bones.

Cassel was hit from behind by Seattle Seahawks defensive end Brandon Mebane on Saturday, leaving the game to go to the locker room for treatment and didn’t return.

The Chiefs signed Cassel to a six-year, $63 million contract during the offseason after acquiring him in a trade from the New England Patriots.
