jenny finch, jennie finchJenae Leles found a good way to erase a bad half-inning.

Team USA’s third baseman committed two errors that led to two runs by the Netherlands, tying the game in the top of the third inning. But Leles responded with a three-run home run in the bottom half of the inning to spur the Americans to a 7-2 victory in their World Cup of Softball opener Thursday night at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium.
Leles added an RBI double in the fifth inning to back untouchable relief pitching from Jennie Finch. Starter Stacey Nelson allowed only two unearned runs in three innings of work, and Finch followed by recording 11 of 12 outs by strikeout in four shutout innings.

Team USA cleanup hitter Kaitlin Cochran drove a triple over the left fielder’s head, scoring Natasha Watley for the game’s first run. Finch followed with an RBI single and a 2-0 lead for the USA.

The Americans will be back in action Friday night at 7 against Italy.
