Nick Taylor wins match-play opener at US Public Links Golf Tournament

University of Washington golfer Nick Taylor won his match-play opener at the U.S. Amateur Public Links championships on Wednesday.
Taylor lost the opening hole before storming back to beat Craig Cyr of Concord, N.H., 6 and 4, at the Jimmie Austin Golf Course on the University of Oklahoma campus.
The 21-year-old Taylor, who will be a senior this fall, caught a lucky break on the 10th hole.
“It was back and forth the first seven or eight holes, and then he got a bad break on 10 when he stepped on his ball,” said Taylor. “That kind of turned things because he got a little frustrated … I was able to birdie the next hole, and then he bogeyed the next, which kind of swung it my way.”
Taylor earned a second-round meeting with 22-year-old Brett Munson of Louisville, Ky., who won 1-up over 2008 semifinalist David Johnson of Palm Bay, Fla.
Taylor, from Abbotsford, B.C., was the top qualifier by four strokes after shooting 66 — 70 — 136 on Monday and Tuesday in stroke play on the 7,289-yard, par-71 course.
Other match-play winners included Cameron Peck of Olympia and Hank Frame of Spokane. Peck got past Tommy Sikes of Midland, Texas, 2 and 1. Frame defeated Michael Brown of Cheltenham, Pa., 4 and 3.
The second and third rounds will be today, with the quarterfinals and semifinals on Friday. The 36-hole title match will be Saturday.
The winner will be one of five amateur players invited to next year’s Masters.
