Danny Briere broke the ice on the Winter Classic Friday afternoon at Skate Zone.

Literally.

Briere’s shot from the left circle left a gaping hole in the block of ice that hid the retro jersey during the unveiling of the Flyers’ Winter Classic retro look for New Year’s Day. The game against the Boston Bruins will be held at Fenway Park.

“It looks good,” Briere said of the white design that features a bright, orange band across the waistline, similar to the Flyers’ jersey in their formative years. It also has orange trim down each of the shoulders with the Winter Classic logo on the right shoulder front panel.

The Bruins will unveil their retro jersey next week in Boston.

“Seeing the big, black nameplate on the back of Simon’s [Gagne] jersey, I like the colors,” Briere said. “Going through this today, it just makes you want to get there more to Jan. 1. It’s going to be a great day. I’m excited to be part of this.”

The jersey was hidden behind several ice panels featuring a Flyer logo. Briere’s shot broke the panel, and then Braydon Coburn’s shot knocked the jersey to the ice. It was Gagne’s jersey used, who incidentally, replaced Ian Laperriere for the event.

“We didn’t know what to expect,” Briere said. “The ice was a lot harder to break than I expected. We didn’t have any bets who would knock the jersey down.”

This will be the NHL’s third Winter Classic and first involving the Flyers. The game will televised on NBC.

“There’s always a debate as to what is Flyer orange,” said team president Peter Luukko about the brightness of the colors. “The effect of the various inks on the material [factor in]. There’s a science to this stuff.”

Speaking about the game itself, Luukko said, “This is an honor. It’s special to the organization. They picked us as a team. It’s the Flyers’ team that the league and television wants.

“We have a great following outside of Philadelphia and our ratings outside of Philadelphia for other teams are very strong. It’s a real testament to the team play of the Flyers that they want to see us.

“The guys are so excited. They want to know how many tickets they can get.”

On Tuesday, registration begins to the general public for the random ticket drawing. Prices range from $50 to $350.
