Danny Wuerffel treated for Guillain-Barre syndrome
Former Florida Gators quarterback Danny Wuerffel was hospitalized for and it is recovering from a uncommon problem identified as Guillain-Barre syndrome.
Wuerffel’s executive assistant, Sara Pace, instructed us late Wednesday the Heisman Trophy winner “is thankful that he is not needed to stay while in the hospital overnight” but will continue receiving outpatient treatment.
According to MayoClinic, Guillain-Barre syndrome is a disorder in which your body’s immune system attacks your nerves. Weakness and tingling in your extremities are usually the first symptoms. These sensations can quickly spread, eventually paralyzing your whole body. In its most severe form, Guillain-Barre syndrome is a medical emergency requiring hospitalization.
Signs and symptoms of Guillain-Barre syndrome may include:
- Prickling, “pins and needles” sensations in your fingers, toes or both
- Weakness or tingling sensations in your legs that spread to your upper body
- Unsteady walking or inability to walk
- Difficulty with eye movement, facial movement, speaking, chewing or swallowing
- Severe pain in your lower back
- Difficulty with bladder control or intestinal functions
- Rapid heart rate
- Low or high blood pressure
- Difficulty breathing
